Shiodadaira’s Many Reservoirs
Reservoir
Ueda City has some of the lowest rainfall in the country, so there are more than 100 reservoirs in Shiodadaira. Many of them were constructed from the late Warring States Period when Sanada was lord of Ueda Castle into the Edo Period. Many legends remain as to the origin of the names of these ponds. And in recognition of the history and scenic beauty of Shiodadaira’s reservoirs, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries selected it as one of their “100 Select Reservoirs.” The reservoirs are carefully maintained by the local farmers who use their water.
