Nagano Prefecture, Ueda City, and the Nagano Prefecture Kangawa Riverbanks Land Improvement District worked together to construct this water utilization dam for irrigation, a water supply, and to generate electricity. The water stored by this dam comes through 15 weirs drawing water from the Kangawa River, and it irrigates about 1,300 hectares (3,200 acres) of farmland, dramatically improving the productivity of farmland that had suffered from a lack of water. And stabilizing the river’s flow has had untold benefits outside of those to agriculture.
