Gorobei Memorial Hall
Rice terrace
Gorobei Ichikawa had the idea of drawing water to the land spreading to the west of the Chikuma River, as he had with the Mikawada Canal and Tsunegi Canal. Finding the “Gotomizu” water source on Mt. Tateshina, he obtained permission from the Komoro Domain to dig a canal. Due to the challenging geography, they made full use of techniques such as tunnels, aqueducts, and embankments. Due to Gorobei’s generosity in pouring his own finances into the project, it has come to be known as the Gorobei New Fields, and now it produces brand rice. Chosen as one of the 100 Select Irrigation Canals.
